Kaylin Ryan’s Birth Story!

March 3, 2012.

I was 40 weeks and 6 days pregnant, and honestly…Not in a rush to end it. Most women try and naturally induce labor, With spicy food, bumpy roads, sex…anything. But not me! I was just enjoying my last days as a mother of 1. We had planned to take Seany to Home Depot for a kids workshop, So we woke up early and got ready. From the moment I got up I was having mild contractions, they didn’t stop me and they were just a little uncomfortable. We got dressed, picked up my Mom and headed to home depot. Seany made a race car at the Kid’s workshop, and I think he had fun! It was a great last outing as a family of 3. Then we headed to TJ Maxx and Papa Gino’s. My Mom and I went into TJ Maxx while Sean took Seany to PetCo. While we were in TJ Maxx I started to time my contractions, I realized they were about 2-3 minutes apart, which is considered active labor. But since they still weren’t too painful, I figured I had some time. I told my Mom that we should go eat, because I needed to go home and get ready, and Call the doctor. She suggested we go straight home, but I needed to eat. Once you’re admitted to the hospital, they don’t let you eat until after you’ve given birth. So we walked over to Papa Gino’s and had pizza, cheesy Bread stick (My one craving) and salad at 10:30 in the morning. Best. Breakfast. Ever.

We dropped off my Mom and she kept Seany. Sean and I headed home and finished packing bags, including Seany’s. Sean took Seany’s bag to my Mom’s and I took a bath. Every few minutes in the bath I heard “You okay Kace!?” From my Dad in the next room. When the contractions didn’t go away in the bath I figured it was probably time. So I called the doctor, knowing she’d tell me to head to the hospital. While I was waiting for my call back, My dad and I were talking about contractions and I was trying to explain them to him. Finally, I got my call back and we headed to the hospital.

When we got there, there was no parking. So we drove around the tiny parking garage searching for a spot until we decided to use the Valet parking (Free!!). Then we went inside and got checked it. The nurse checked me and I was 4cm! That’s when the nurse told me I was being admitted. For some reason, I was surprised. I got in to the bed so they could give me my IV. I’m terrified of blood work, so I thought an IV would be much better. Wrong!! Sean held my hand and I looked away as the nurse inserted the IV. It took forever, and I could feel the catheter in my hand. I started shaking and crying. The nurse had to take off my ring and clean my nails because I had bled so much. Then there was a lot of waiting. I had kind of decided that I didn’t want an epidural, but I wouldn’t be upset if I got one. I declined the epidural everytime they asked.

Dealing with the pain was…interesting. Nothing was comfortable. How can it be when your lower abdomen gets insanely tight and unbearably painful for a minute every 2-3 minutes? I tried bouncing on a ball, walking, sitting, kneeling, and rocking. I finally settled at resting on the ball. Sean would hold my hand and feed me ice through contractions (Hospital ice is the best!) Our Nurse, Lisa (also the best!) would rub my back and tell me I was doing amazing. Then I asked for an epidural, Half jokingly. Lisa said No, because “when they start asking it means they’re ready.” So onto pushing we went!

“Push into the Pain” Easier said than done. The only thing that makes it possible is knowing that’s the only way to end it. 3 pushes and 15 minutes later at 10:07pm, Kaylin was born. They put her on my chest and Sean cut the cord (But to be honest, I don’t remember that) She was 8lbs 12.6 oz and 21 inches. I had given birth to an almost 13lb baby completely drug free. I still can’t believe it. 12 hours ago, I was at home depot building a race car with Seany and now, I was laying in a hospital bed, with a baby girl…My baby girl.
